Self employment in the United States

In the United States of America it has always been thought self employment was a gift of a free enterprise economy. In fact, a good portion of the firms we take phone calls and orders for are small to medium-sized companies. The current statistics show that  8.2 percent of america’s work force is self-employed. Some attribute this rate of self employment is  due to the current state of the economy. Self sufficiency has been taken to new heights with these go-getters who may not have been able to secure positions within larger corporations. Most of the people who have started their own business were laid off and went back to college to find a new degree in a promising field. Then, they went out and started their own business.

While these numbers sound encouraging, when studied further, it looks like th overall self employment numbers actually declined in the past four years. The Orange County Register wrote:

“The net number of self-employed owners of unincorporated businesses has actually fallen since 2007, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but in what seems like a contradiction, more Americans are going into self employment, notes Scott Shane, visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland.

“A recent study suggests that, in 2009, the number of people becoming self-employed spiked to its highest level in more than a decade,” Shane explains. “Unfortunately, a careful look at multiple sources of data shows that the Great Recession was actually a time of considerable decline in entrepreneurial activity in the United States.”

The explanation for the discrepancy, he says, is that while the number of people between the ages of 20 and 64 who became self-employed increased by 40 per thousand from 2007 to 2009, many existing self-employed went out of business during the recession.”
